Governance Health Check

Governors are now more responsible for their schools than at any other time. The expectations placed on governors have risen and their involvement in their school is key to its development.

Inspire TSA is committed to supporting the development of high quality governance. The governance health check provides schools and academies to review their practice.

The Offer

The Inspire TSA is well-placed to support the development and improvement of the governing body and is offering a Governance Health Check (GHC) to schools and academies. The GHC is available to all educational phases and to all Ofsted categories. It is intended to provide an overview on governance and to generate high level comments on the strengths and possible areas for attention.

The health check consists of one days’ work, covering a desk top review and in school interviews which includes:

A review of key strategic documents

1:1 discussions with the Chair, the Headteacher/Principal and the Clerk

Production of a concise bullet point report

Delivery

The GHC is delivered by a National Leader of Governance (NLG) or National Leader of Education(NLE). National leaders of governance are highly effective chairs of governors, who use their skills and experience to support chairs of governors in other schools and academies. They work to increase leadership capacity to help raise standards so that improvements can be sustained.

Focus

The GHC will focus on elements of:

  • vision, ethos, and strategic direction
  • delivery of statutory responsibilities
  • holding the Headteacher/Principal to account for performance
  • effective governance practice
  • mentoring/coaching the chair

Reporting and follow up

The resulting report will be produced within a week of the GHC and will highlight strengths and suggested issues that the school might want to look at further. This might lead to further actions, including a full governance review, or advice on a specific area, or just some supportive suggestions on how to get more out of the current arrangements.
